What is communication? The Merriam-Webster dictionary states the following:
com·mu·ni·ca·tion (Pronunciation: k&-"myü-n&-'kA-sh&n)
Function: noun
1 : an act or instance of transmitting
2 a : information communicated b : a verbal or written message
3 a : a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior <the function of pheromones in insect communication >; also : exchange of information b : personal rapport <a lack of communication between old and young persons>
With an estimated 6,809 languages in use today, communication presents an interesting challenge. The purpose of our exploratory course is to examine how people communicate, how languages are related to each other, and how to do basic communication in a variety of languages, including Italian, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Tongan and others. In addition, each student will investigate and present on a language of his/her choosing that has not been studied thus far in the FLEX rotation.
